Track-day tire pressure
The tire is the report card. Wear pattern, cold-to-hot pressure, and carcass temperature tell you more about motorcycle setup than a clicker ever will. Most “won’t turn” on a track day is a front that is cold, square, or 2 psi off.
Cold vs hot
- Cold: sitting, shade, before the out-lap. Same gauge every time.
- Hot: pits, within a minute of coming in.
- Tune to the hot number you actually ride on. Cold is only the paddock set.
A blind “+3 psi” is folklore. Pressure follows temperature. Ambient air sets the paddock (cold) gas. Asphalt sets how hot the carcass gets. Gay-Lussac at constant volume is the honest model: absolute pressure over absolute temperature stays put. MotoTuner pulls local weather, estimates asphalt, and predicts the rise instead of guessing.
Wear patterns that beat a clicker story
- Center square — often pressure or not enough lean / heat.
- Shoulder square — geometry or a rider who lives on the edge.
- Cupping — pressure or a tired damper.
- Graining / tearing — heat and slide.
- Marbling — the tire worked; write the pressures that did it.
Photo the last 50 mm of the contact patch, cold, in good light. Compare left vs right — that is a geometry tell.
IR temps
Three zones, not one “tire temp” lie: inside (loaded shoulder), crown, outside. A useful sport window is about 70–95 °C. A 15–20 °C left-to-right split is geometry or rider. A cold crown and hot shoulders is a pressure / lean story.
Heat cycles
A cycle is carcass to operating temp, then cool. Count sessions that actually got the tire hot. Write the number on the carcass with a crayon. Remaining life is estimated, not a lab count.
