One change at a time
A useful test is one change, one question, one answer. Hero laps with three clickers moved and a new tire pressure are stories, not data. Club racers get faster when they can repeat a lap, not when they collect folklore.
The protocol
- Write the baseline on the setup sheet: sag, clicks, pressures, height, electronics.
- Change one thing.
- Ride a flying stint. The out-lap does not count.
- Write what you felt in entry / mid / exit, plus IR and lap times.
- Keep or revert. Then the next change.
3-zone IR
Within a minute of coming in, same gun, same distance, same spot:
- Inside — loaded shoulder. Did you use the tire?
- Center — crown. Load and pressure upright.
- Outside — unloaded shoulder. Asymmetry or a rider who never flipped it.
Balance test
Before you touch a clicker: does it take the brake and fall in, or push? Hold a line mid-corner? Squat, hook, or spin on exit — and is the front still there? If entry and exit disagree, that is usually height or sag, not rebound.
Lap consistency
A 1:38.2 with a 1.5 s spread is not pace. Sample standard deviation of the flying laps tells you if the rider can repeat the motorcycle. Chase σ before you chase a hero lap you cannot find again next month.
MotoTuner is a pit-board app, not a race engineer. Calculators are handbook rules of thumb. You own how the motorcycle is set.
