Motorcycle suspension setup for track days
Most riders turn clickers because the motorcycle felt wrong. That is how you get lost. Track-day suspension setup has an order:
- Know the rider — weight with gear, style, discipline.
- Know the bike — springs, clicker range, stock geometry, gearing.
- Get sag in the window first. Eighty percent of “handling” complaints start here.
- Change one thing, then test it — tire temps, balance, lap.
- Only then chase damping, geometry, oil, electronics, sprockets.
Sag is ride height
Preload moves you in the stroke. If the collar is at the stop and sag is still out, change the spring. A bike that sits too high will not use the tire. A bike that sits too low uses up travel and steers vague. Damping around either is wasted Saturday.
Then clickers
Once sag is honest, a mid-range start map gets you out of the pits. Compression for the hit, rebound for the return, HS/LS if you have them. One clicker per run. See motorcycle clickers explained.
Oil is not damping
Fork oil height (air gap) sets the air spring at the end of the stroke — dive and bottoming. Viscosity is the fluid thickness and it changes with temperature. Nitrogen in the shock is not a ride-height tool. Do not use the Schrader to “raise the rear.”
Geometry is coupled
Raise the rear or drop the front and effective rake gets steeper: quicker, less stable, the front can go light. A 5 mm dogbone change also invalidates the sag you just set. Measure sag again. Trail is the self-centering lever; more trail is stability, less is twitch.
Write it on one setup sheet
That is the pit board. One sheet per bike, one track, one day. Next club day you are not reconstructing folklore from a text thread.
